The Sunday Test: Is Your Job Draining You, or Just Your Weekend?

By Sunday evening, the workweek can already be sitting heavily in your head. You may have your clothes ready and the alarm set, yet already feel tired before Monday has even arrived. One Sunday may simply follow a full weekend, too little sleep, family responsibilities or a difficult week ahead. Life can feel heavy sometimes.

When that feeling keeps returning, pause and ask yourself what is really going on.

Try to name the problem

Start by getting more specific. When you picture tomorrow, what is the first thing that weighs on you? It may be a workload you can never seem to get on top of. It may be a relationship at work that has become difficult. Sometimes the reason is harder to name, but the feeling is still there.

You do not need the perfect answer right away. Asking yourself what you are dreading, and how long you have felt that way, is enough to begin. You cannot improve a situation you have not yet understood.

Then decide what you are willing to do

Knowing what is wrong is only the first part. The next question is more personal: what are you willing to do to make things better?

The action depends on what you find. You may need to speak honestly with a supervisor, ask for a change in how the work is organised, or accept that you have tried enough and want to look elsewhere.

You do not have to make a dramatic decision on a Sunday night. Updating your CV, writing down what you have achieved and exploring the jobs available in Curaçao can already give you a clearer picture. The Jobs available in Curaçao section is a useful place to start if you want to see what opportunities are currently available. You may find that you want to stay and fix what can be fixed. You may also find that you are ready for something else.

A word for people in leadership roles

A quiet employee can be unhappy for a long time. Some people keep doing their work, meet their deadlines and say very little about what is bothering them.

Leading people means noticing more than whether the work is getting done. It means paying attention to whether people feel respected, supported and able to speak up when something is not working.

Good leadership also requires regular, honest conversations. Do not wait until an employee hands in a resignation letter to ask how things are going. By then, they may already have thought it through for months. Making time to listen gives supervisors a chance to understand what is happening while there is still time to respond.

You may not be able to solve every issue, but people should know they can raise one. They should also understand what will happen next, even when the answer is not the one they hoped for.

That is part of the responsibility that comes with leading others. We will return to it in future briefings about leadership.

The Sunday test

Very few people jump out of bed excited for work every Monday morning. Your job should still leave room for dignity, safety and a life outside work.

If Sunday keeps bringing up the same feeling, listen to it. Find out what it is trying to tell you, and choose one next step that moves you in a better direction. If that next step is exploring a new opportunity, start with the jobs available in Curaçao and give yourself a clearer view of what could come next.
